Great Movies in the Great Hall: Dune
February 8 @ 6:30 pm - 9:30 pm
Experience an evening of science fiction, culture, and cinematic artistry with a screening of Dune: Part One. The event kicks off with a presentation by Dr. Leigha McReynolds, a lecturer at the University of Maryland, who will explore Frank Herbert’s iconic novel and its 2021 adaptation by Denis Villeneuve. Dr. McReynolds will examine how Herbert’s vision of the future was shaped by Native American and Islamic cultures, as well as concerns about conservation and fossil fuel use. Discover why Dune is regarded as a masterpiece and its enduring relevance in today’s world.
Following the presentation, enjoy the epic film in the grand setting of the Great Hall.
Picnic style! Bring your own food, blanket or lawn chair to our Great Hall, for an unforgettable evening. No outside alcohol permitted. Popcorn & Drinks (including beer and wine) available for purchase.

About Dr. Leigha McReynolds
Leigha McReynolds holds a PhD in English Literature from The George Washington University, and is currently a lecturer at the University of Maryland, College Park. She has a chapter published in Discovering Dune on the role of eugenics in the novel, she has published on reactormag.com (formerly tor.com), and is a regular panelist at fan conventions, including WorldCon and AwesomeCon. You can also find her teaching classes for the public at Politics and Prose.
