Educator of Community Engagement

Education Department

The National Building Museum seeks an experienced educator to join the community engagement team in the Museum’s Education Department. Supporting and extending the Museum’s mission to inspire curiosity in the world we design and build, the work of the Education Department engages participants of all ages in a range of interdisciplinary activities and programs. The intended impact of the work is that participants investigate their own built world and value their role in shaping it for the future.

This position oversees community programming and initiatives, with an emphasis on Museum Members.  Primary programs include the Museum’s Camp program and Members’ Birthday Parties; other experiences include programming for Family+ Members, workshops and activities for specific membership groups, and programming for other community groups or audiences.

Working as part of a team within the education department, the incumbent develops, plans, and implements impactful programming for children, families, and other audiences that integrates the Museum’s mission, exhibitions and collections; the Education Department’s outcomes; and best practices in the museum education field. The incumbent plans for short-term and long-term audience engagement, develops specific programs and activities, trains facilitators and volunteers, implements and evaluates programs, and manages all related details.

Two main responsibilities for this position are the Museum’s robust Camp program and Birthday Parties for Members.  Through several week-long Camp programs in July and August, the Museum typically engages youth from 2^nd through 7^th grade. The incumbent develops curricula, trains and supervises camp staff, fosters communication with campers and families, and markets Camp programming.  From September to June, Birthday Parties are available to Members on weekends.  The incumbent develops curricula, trains and supervises part-time staff who facilitate parties on weekends, and oversees scheduling and related administrative details.

The position works with Education Department staff and other Museum staff in planning programs and experiences, works with other Education Department staff to best support the work of the department, participates in or leads departmental project teams as assigned, and takes parts in collaborative work of the department.

Occasional evening and weekend work is required.

Responsibilities

• Plan, implement, evaluate, and manage the Museum’s annual Camp programming.
• Plan, implement, evaluate, and manages the Museum’s Birthday Parties for Members.
• Plan, implement, and evaluate special programming for Members.
• Plan, implement, and evaluate community programming.
• Recruit, select, train, and supervise part-time staff and/or volunteers for programs.
• Develop and manage annual budgets.
• Communicate about programs with Museum Members and others.
• Lead and/or work on Education project teams and collaborative projects as required.
• Other duties as assigned.

Required qualifications

• Master’s Degree and at least 3 years, or the professional equivalence of experience in museum education or related field, especially with youth, community, and/or family programming.
• Knowledge of museum education standards and practices
• Knowledge of museum and/or industry practices for camp programming
• Experience developing, implementing, and evaluating programs/activities for youth, preferably in an informal learning environment
• Experience effectively managing staff and/or volunteers
• Demonstrated ability to communicate verbally and in writing with a variety of audiences
• Demonstrated ability to simultaneously balance multiple projects in a fast-paced environment
• Excellent customer service skills
• Experience collaborating with a variety of individuals and organizations
• Demonstrated ability to solve problems effectively
• Ability to work independently as well as within a team environment

Optional qualifications

• Knowledge of National Building Museum collections, exhibitions, and related content areas
• Knowledge of or interest in architecture, design, engineering, and the built environment is desirable but not required
• Experience creating specific programming to address diversity, access, equity, and/or inclusion
