Volunteers play a vital role in supporting the National Building Museum’s mission and enjoy exclusive benefits such as free admission to select programs and invitations to special volunteer events. Learn more about our volunteer opportunities and how you can get involved.

Docents

Our Museum Docents lead visitors on free, guided tours of the Museum’s historic building, sharing the unique story of its creation and the wide variety of uses it has had over the decades. They also provide special guided tours of the Museum’s permanent exhibitions to provide a more in-depth experience 

Gift Shop

Museum Shop volunteers support daily operations by assisting visitors, handling sales, and helping maintain a well-organized shop environment. 

Information Desk

Information Desk volunteers welcome and assist visitors by sharing details about current and upcoming exhibitions and programs, offering directions, and helping guests make the most of their visit to the Museum. 

Public Programs

Public Programs volunteers help ensure the smooth operation of the Museum’s public programs, including lectures, festivals, and more. They assist with set up, check-in , guest orientation, and crowd control. 

Community Engagement

Community Engagement volunteers interact with the public at museum events on and offsite to inform them of the museum’s mission and programs and help cultivate new relationships with organizations and individuals in the museum’s community. 

Education

Education Volunteers help support the Museum’s educational programs, such as weekly Storytimes, monthly STEAM Saturdays, and The Big Build This role is ideal for individuals who enjoy working with children and creating fun, educational experiences.
