Museum Teacher: Camp Extended Care

The work of the Education Department engages participants of all ages in a range of interdisciplinary activities and programs. The intended impact of the work is that participants investigate their own built world and value their role in shaping it for the future.

The position of Museum Teacher: Camp Extended Care is responsible for leading a variety of games, crafts, building challenges, and other camp activities during camp extended care. As part of a camp team, which includes the Museum Teachers, Camp Assistants, and Camp Directors, the Museum Teacher is responsible for the safety, care, and wellbeing of each camper.

The position is 12.5 hours/week mid-June to mid-August, Monday – Friday, 3:30 pm– 5 pm.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Work with the Camp Directors to develop and implement project-based activities for the Museum’s extended care program
• Responsible for daily prep, set up, and clean up.
• Collaborate with Camp Directors on developing a weekly schedule for the campers.
• Set and enforce clear behavior expectations for campers; identify and respond to camper behavior issues appropriately as they arise; communicate behavior situations with the Camp Directors in an appropriate time frame.

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

Specific qualifications include:

• Must be 18 years or older at the start of camp.
• One year experience (paid or volunteer) working with children ages 6 and up in an education (formal or informal) or similar setting.
• Experience working as a member of a team as well as demonstrated ability to accomplish tasks independently.
• Excellent communication skills with both children and adults.

Optional qualifications:

• Experience working with youth in a camp, after school program, or recreation setting.
• Knowledge of or interest in architecture, design, engineering, and the built environment is desirable but not required.
• Experience modifying lessons and activities to meet different learning styles and abilities.
• Coursework and/or a Bachelor’s Degree in education, recreation, museum studies, or related field.

ADA specifications:

• This is an active work position that requires the ability to move about the Museum frequently and to position oneself to interact & communicate appropriately with participants. Employee may be responsible for moving objects up to 20 lbs. when needed.
• Offsite travel required as part of the position during the course of the work day.
